We read today about the bench being dedicated to first responders and were honored by the idea. The act of being a first responder is putting someone else’s life before yours, and yet police officers, firefighters and EMTs are generally very humble people who would rather reunite with someone they’ve helped than get any attention for their actions. It is a fitting tribute that you would honor those people in a way that benefits the entire community.
It is also extremely important to recognize that many first responders at the marathon scene were average citizens. When they took orders, put pressure on injuries and used their clothing as tourniquets -- they became the real heroes because their immediate actions are what saved lives.
Finally, there are things everyone can do to make themselves and their families safer. We would urge all people to learn CPR and basic First Aid and have good First Aid kits in their car and home. You never know when you’ll need it.

I was Joey’s 3rd and 4th grade teacher at Winn Brook School. I retired in 2010. My first two years at Winn Brook in 1982 -- 1984 were very exciting for me. I loved having Joey in my class. He so enjoyed learning and participating in the special hands-on projects and plays that we performed for the students and their parents. Joe and Kathy were always very involved, interested and supportive. Joey was very popular with his classmates. Building Joey’s Park in 1989 was a wonderful community effort. All the Winn Brook students tok part in preparing the building of this wonderful addition to the school and town. The video and still pictures of Joey and Joe & Kathy brought back some very fond memories. I’ll be there to help construct Joey’s Park II.

Working on the first Joey’s Park was an amazing experience. At that time I felt the friendships that developed during the build to be the most significant part of the project.
Being a neighbor to the park this week I have once again enjoyed the camaraderie of neighbors working together and exchanging greetings on the street in a way that has been missed by our high tech society. People greeting people is the connection I have missed.
Louise Dohanian was the first to envision the community park that came to be Joey’s Park. We owe here great gratitude for setting into motion this wonderful experience!
Thank you to all who have made this possible!
